At London's luxury Connaught Hotel, unusual small pieces of furniture are causing a stir. Guests are offered exquisite pastries in "Mystery Boxes." The wow factor is guaranteed not only because of the contents, but also because, thanks to a built-in mechanism, all the drawers open simultaneously in all directions.

 

The "Mystery Boxes" are entirely handcrafted. Made of oak, the lid is finished with a wavy, figured oak veneer. The drawer interiors are treated with food-safe, pure white lacquer, which perfectly showcases the contents of each drawer. A total of 44 gears are incorporated on two levels to ensure the mechanism functions correctly.

 

Joop Duyn & Sons Ltd. , a high-end carpentry firm from Ireland, designed and manufactured the "Mystery Boxes." The entire project took over a year, from the initial consultation and research to prototype production and surface treatment, which was meticulously tailored to the existing hotel interior.
