Military Field Box
A beautiful military field box that we had the pleasure of repurposing to create dual layer lift out cutlery canteens.
This mahogany and brass chest was sealed inside with a black tar-like substance - Pine tar, and was used specifically as a waterproofer and to hold the structural integrity of the box ‘out in the field’.
The etched brass plate on the top has a symbol of a Lion standing, facing left, tongue out.
This is known as a Lion Rampant and taken by many different families as their crest. It is also a near exact copy of The Royal Banner of the Royal Arms of Scotland.
The lock is stamped ‘WR’ (with a crest over) and ‘Barrons Patent’. William Reign or William IV (r. 1830-1837) which gives us guideline dates for the box.
